Google Gadgets For Linux

Google Gadgets for Linux provides a platform for running desktop gadgets under Linux, catering to the unique needs of Linux users. We are compatible with the gadgets written for Google Desktop for Windows as well as the Universal Gadgets on iGoogle. Following Linux norms, this project is open-sourced under the Apache License.

An important area where Google Desktop for Linux is different from its siblings on other operating systems is support for gadgets. Now, the Linux version of Google Gadgets will extend the gadgets platform to Linux users. By enabling cross-platform gadgets, a large library of existing gadgets are immediately available to Linux users. In addition, gadget developers will benefit from a much larger potential user base without having to learn a new API.

There’s two main components to the application: one is a common gadget library responsible for running and presenting a gadget, and the other is a host program that allows the user to choose gadgets and run them on the desktop. Currently we have hosts written for GTK+ and QT, with the GTK+ host offering a sidebar similar to that of Google Desktop for Windows.

Organizing your photos based on who is in the photo !

Google Launched Picase 3.0 beta version on september 2 and also introduced the name tag feature ,a whole new concept of sorting photos based on who is in the photos.

From the start, Picasa’s goal has been to help people get more from their digital cameras. Earlier versions of Picasa focused on supporting users at every critical juncture in the digital photo lifecycle — making it easy to import, organize, edit, print, and (since the advent of Picasa Web Albums) publish your photos online. Unlike piecemeal alternatives, Picasa manages all these things inside a single application, and with a consistent, easy-to-use interface.

Fast-forward to today, and a few things have changed. Sharing online has skyrocketed in importance, as more of us develop a network of friends and family who are tuning into our pictures. Online availability also matters more as we start to use our phones, TVs, and wifi frames to deliver our photos. And as users get more experienced, they’re demanding more creative ways to remix, enjoy, and distribute their photos.

We’ve therefore brought the Picasa software and Picasa Web Albums much closer together, breaking down barriers between your home PC and your online albums. New controls in Picasa 3 make it much easier to quickly upload photos, and we’ve added a new ‘sync to web’ feature that automatically updates online albums when you add or edit photos on your computer.

GMDESK – Your google interface of gmail, docs, gtalk on desktop.

GMDesk is a Adobe AIR based application that lets you run Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Maps as a stand-alone application to do all your mail , calendar, Docs, Maps, Reader etc. The best advantage of this application is that you dont have to open websites to access these services. GMDesk offers an easy menu as well as keyboard shortcuts to switch between different Google services, and you can specify what default service you want the application to start with.

Another good feature of GMDesk is that it supports Google Apps account as well. This can be selected from the option. You have the option to select regular Google account or Google Apps account. You can also select the start up service from the preferences list. Apart from this there is option to run the application in full screen.

GMDesk is a good start up application, but there are few things to improve as well. The fonts in the application is bit on smaller side and this makes less readable. Further you can access only one application at a time, this means if you are using Gmail, you will need to close it to open Docs or Calendar. Another aspect to improve is the memory consumption of GMDesk which is again on a higher side.

NOTE : Adobe AIR runtime is required to install and run GMDesk.
