GMDESK – Your google interface of gmail, docs, gtalk on desktop.

GMDesk is a Adobe AIR based application that lets you run Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs and Google Maps as a stand-alone application to do all your mail , calendar, Docs, Maps, Reader etc. The best advantage of this application is that you dont have to open websites to access these services. GMDesk offers an easy menu as well as keyboard shortcuts to switch between different Google services, and you can specify what default service you want the application to start with.

Another good feature of GMDesk is that it supports Google Apps account as well. This can be selected from the option. You have the option to select regular Google account or Google Apps account. You can also select the start up service from the preferences list. Apart from this there is option to run the application in full screen.

GMDesk is a good start up application, but there are few things to improve as well. The fonts in the application is bit on smaller side and this makes less readable. Further you can access only one application at a time, this means if you are using Gmail, you will need to close it to open Docs or Calendar. Another aspect to improve is the memory consumption of GMDesk which is again on a higher side.

NOTE : Adobe AIR runtime is required to install and run GMDesk.

Invisible Mode on Gtalk in google Mail.

One of my wish list for Google Talk is now available in Gmail Chat. Gmail Chat has added the invisible status option. This feature is available in the new version of Gmail, supported in Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 2 or later. This works in Google Apps mail chat also, provided the new version is allowed by the administrator.

To change to invisible status, click on Set Status Here dropdown below your name in Gmail Chat and select invisible form the list. So now you have the option for setting status as visible, invisible or busy. Gmail Chat remembers your status when you login next time in Gmail.

This feature doesn’t work if you have Google Talk desktop client or Google talk gadget running. Google Talk client still does not support invisible status mode yet. It is said that Gmail Chat is the most used interface for Google Talk. Let us hope that Google will soon add these features to the next release of Google Talk client.

If you are in invisible mode, you will not be notified of your friends request to add you to their friends list. I hope this will be fixed in soon.

Run multiple Instances of Google Talk on your windows

Its been a while since I have fiddled to run multiple instances of Gtalk on my computer. Although now I majorly use Ubuntu as an operating system I still windows to run some software that are absolutely necessary for me. Since I have more than 1 Id at gtalk and all different people spread across different IDs I thus found a solution of running multiple instances of Gtalk.

Law9 -

To have multiple ids logged into Google Talk from the same computer, just change the Google Talk shortcut (in Programs or Desktop) to include /nomutex at the end of it and save.

You can also run the program from Start » Run and type “c:\Program Files\Google\Google Talk\googletalk.exe” /nomutex The /nomutex option allows you to open more than one instance of Google Talk and login with different ids.

Also in order to make some changes in the interface for bold type *your message* , for italic type _your message_, for line break type shift+enter, use control+tab to switch through open chat windows, etc.. A chat message can be 32767 characters long.
