Android Phone Virtual keyboard will be here by 2009 !

T-mobile G1 has really got excellent features. But there was no virtual keyboard. To force the users to use the QWERTY keyboard they haven’t had a virtual keyboard. As many users are complaining about it, the latest version of Android coming in Q1 09 will have a Virtual Keyboard. It is really annoying to type on the QWERT keypad and you will definitely love to use the virtual keyboard.

However the silk soft touchpad isn’t that bad as well.Given the fact that the operating system is very smooth and the experience is enriching the keyboard now adds on to our wishlist.

The Android roadmap for Q1 of 2009 has got some good things for us to make our lives easy. They are working on Input method framework and Input method engines.

Input method framework (IMF)

IMF will enable us to use other input methods like soft keyboards. I would be easier to use a virtual keyboard rather than using a physical keyboard. IMF will also help application developers to provide IME applications.

Input method engines (IME)

IME will support soft keyboards, a dictionary of suggestions, and a suggestion algorithm. This will help us to type the messages very quickly and easily.

Gmail 2.0 for Mobiles – Improved user experience for mobile users.

I had installed Gmail for Mobile on my Palm treo mobile. I really use it a lot while traveling. Yesterday I noticed that Google had released a latest version Gmail Client for Mobiles. The latest Gmail for mobile version 2.0 supports J2ME Mobiles and BlackBerry phones. The main focus for this release is faster user experience and Reliability. They re-architectured the entire application to give us a great experience

Latest Improvements and features

  • Great Performance Improvement – You will definitely see a great improvements in speed and you will experience a smooth scrolling.
  • Multiple accounts management – Now you can easily switch between your accounts. So if you have a personal and business accounts then your task will be very easy.
  • Save Multiple Drafts in Mobile – Now you can save your drafts in your mobile. So when you need to send a message urgently you can pick one of them.
  • Useful Shortcut Keys – There are many shortcut keys that have come up. If you have a QWERTY Keypad then you can use the shortcuts to make your life easy. There are shortcuts like ‘Z’ for undo etc.
  • New offline suppor t – The one which I liked is the Basic offline support. SO you can read your mails even when you are offline. You have sent a mail and if there is no network, your mail will be stored in outbox and it is sent to the recipient when there is a network coverage.

I very well liked all the features of the latest Gmail for mobile version 2.0 . Intrestingly it is available in 35 languages.

I read about 2 types of cases:

Buy Legally Unlocked Apple iPhone 3G at HongKong Apple Store

The iPhone users must be aware that when they buy an iPhone, their iPhone 3G is tied up to a local Telecom provider by Apple. But if the iPhone 3G is purchased through the Hong Kong Online Apple Store, then you do officially and legally get an unlocked iphone which can be used by you with any operator.

The iPhone prices can be found out by visiting online the Hong Kong Apple Store. The 8GB (white) is available for $5400 ($692 USD) while the 16GB iPhone (black and white) is available for $6200 ($794 USD). It is further stated that it “can be activated with any provider“. But as it an officially unlocked version the prices are really high.

Currently the HongKong mobile users can select the operator of their choice and need not be tied up with any official partner Telecom carriers. There is no longer any requirement of visiting the gray market for purchasing the illegally jail broken unlocked iPhones.

Giving the mobile users the option to select the service provider of their own choice will definitely boost the sales of the iPhone. This is certainly a good step by Apple. But the prices makes many people to think about it!!

Apple iPhone – “Could not activate cellular data network”

Last week when I updated my Apple iPhone 3G with the new firmware updated version 2.0.2 released recently. As usual the iPhone worked perfectly normal after this upgrade, but surprisingly today morning when I tried to check my mails on the phone it started giving following error “Could not activate cellular data network” which I expected to be related to service provider and blamed them but later something else actually happened. I tried restarting the iPhone for several times but it didn’t work at all for a long time after a series of attempts.


I really got fed up and I tried calling AirTel customer care, but they suggested me to call Apple Care India(1800-425-0744) which is toll free and I expected some good support from them. When I called Apple Care people for help, they guided me to the following URL to have a look at support information on iPhone: http://www.apple.com/support/iphone/in/. So again with a hope to fix it I tried opening the web page but the above link disappointed me by giving “Page Not Found” error( Apple are you Listening? sorry Reading?).

None of the above information or support helped me to resolve this issue, then I came back to home and started searching for this problem on Google(Yes I believe in Google) expecting some useful information. Fortunately I found some useful information which gave me some relief after all the attempts.

I had resolved this issue very easily by following these steps(twice):

Go to: Menu > Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Once you Reset the network settings, iPhone3G got restarted and then above issue got resolved related to cellular network and now it was working fine. Thank God(Should I say Thank you Google?).
