Google Improves Scanned Document Indexing With Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Technology

Scanned documents are really very useful which may contain text and images. Until now Google rarely included scanned documents in it’s search results. Recently Google has announced that it will now include scanned documents in the search results. Google had used the Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology to scan the documents so that words in the documents can be searched and Indexed.

So you can find more valuable data from Google. Earlier Google used to Index these as Image Files. So only the title and meta data is used for a search. But now as the scanned document is converted to PDF format it can search and index the entire data. So if there are any scanned documents you can view them in either PDF format or as a HTML file.

To see the new system at work, click on these search queries.

A survey to test women reaction on expensive cars !

Wired Blog recently reported on a study that proves that exotic cars turn women on, specifically featuring how the sounds affect the fairer sex:

To test the theory that high-performance cars get people hot, Moxon had 40 men and women listen to recordings of the three Italian exotics and a Volkswagen Polo. Everyone had significantly more testosterone after hearing the exotics, and all of the women were turned on by the Maserati. The guys, on the other hand, were drawn to the Lamborghini.

Are you serious guys ? I mean really ? Do you need to do a survey or a research to know that ?

Powerpoint presentation without microsoft office !

I was reminded of this “quick tip” topic while I was doing research for an upcoming Tech–for Everyone article, and the information I wanted to read was contained in a PowerPoint slideshow (aka “presentation”) archive, available online.. a “.ppt” file.

Normally, this is no problem: you click on the “view” hyperlink; are asked if you want to “Open” or “Save” the file (since all I wanted to do was read it, I chose “open”). Here is where I was reminded that the machine I was surfing on was new and did not have Office installed — “Windows cannot open this file:”

You may have seen a window like this in your computer career…

Fortunately, a quick visit to the Microsoft Download Center is all that’s required to enable my machine to view PowerPoint Presentations (and cool slides of airshows).

How to : If you are not using the Microsoft Office suite of programs, download and install the free PowerPoint Viewer 2007.

A Spot in the Sun…

“It looks like a speck of dust on the surface of the sun. But this spectacular picture shows the space shuttle Atlantis alongside the International Space Station (ISS) silhouetted as they orbit the earth.
The image was taken in Normandy by French astrophotographer Thierry Legault. He used a digital camera attached to a £5,000 specially kitted-out telescope.
The shuttle, which returned last week from a 12-day mission, and the space station can be seen in orbit 250 miles above the earth while the sun is 93 million miles away.
